The country is renowned for its vast wilderness and frequent bushfires, but this year’s fire season arrives fast and furious, with more than 100 fires burning simultaneously across the nation. The south-eastern state of New South Wales, home to Sydney, has been the hardest hit, with over four million acres of land destroyed and 600 homes lost.

Extreme dryness and low humidity fuel the devastating wildfires, creating a “perfect storm” for one of the worst fire seasons on record in Australia.

To bring immediate help to the firefighters and those affected, a team of Volunteer Ministers (VMs) is mobilised to the disaster zone.

The Volunteers act swiftly to identify where help is needed most. With hundreds of exhausted firefighters working around the clock to combat the blazes, the Volunteers are asked to serve as a support team for the fire crews. They are immediately assigned a space in the Firefighter Command Centre, located just one hour from Sydney and close to one of the largest fires.

VMs have been put in charge of the catering line, preparing over 450 meals a day for the firefighting personnel.

Volunteer Ministers live by the motto “Something Can Be Done About It,” and their courses provide the knowledge that makes this possible. The Scientology Tools for Life are available free of charge.

Volunteer Ministers have been working day and night shifts to provide assists to emergency personnel, offering much-needed relief from the strain and extreme fatigue of fighting the fires. With each assist, the Volunteers observe energy and renewed strength returning to the firefighters. After receiving a nerve assist, one firefighter told a Volunteer Minister, “It was absolutely fantastic. I went in with a headache and tension, and I’ve now come out with my headache 95 per cent gone and I feel really good.” The commander of one fire team publicly thanked the Volunteers after receiving an assist, stating that he felt lighter as a result.

The Volunteers have become a bright yellow beacon of help at the base camp and a stable source of support for the emergency personnel. One local volunteer remarked, “I have been volunteering my whole life, and my parents were volunteers, but I have never seen volunteers like you Scientologists. You go hard, you don’t complain, and you just get the job done. You have done so much for our community.”
