Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Sri Lanka
A year ago, within hours of the tsunamis hitting South East Asia, teams of Scientology Volunteer Ministers started arriving in Sri Lanka and began the work of cleaning up after the devastation: making sure people had food, shelter and water, helping the emergency rescue teams, and identifying the dead.
But once the immediate physical damage had been addressed, the Volunteer Ministers began doing what they alone can do—providing Scientology and Dianetics techniques, developed by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, giving hope to those who survived.
According to the Scientology Handbook, which serves as the training manual for Scientology Volunteer Ministers, “...there are two sides to healing—the spiritual and the structural or physical—there are also two states that can be spiritually attained. The first of these states might be classified as ‘humanly tolerable.’ Assists* come under this heading. The second is ‘spiritually improved.’”
Hundreds of Volunteer Ministers arrived in Sri Lanka, sent from Scientology churches around the world to provide comfort and relief—making life “humanly tolerable” through Scientology assists.
In the past year Scientology Volunteer Ministers have personally giving nearly 34 thousand assists and trained over 10 thousand Sri Lankans in how to use these spiritual techniques.
While assists helped people come to grips with what happened to them so they can get on with their lives, it is Dianetics techniques that accomplish the second aspect of healing—spiritual improvement. And so, two weeks after the tsunami hit, Scientologists began providing Dianetics training seminars in Sri Lanka.
The first seminar was delivered to 60 Buddhist monks who were then able to provide spiritual relief to those who came to them for help. Dianetics training has continued to this day, with seminars in refugee camps, town halls, universities and hospitals.
Scientology Volunteer Ministers provided over 5 thousand Dianetics sessions and gave Dianetics training to nearly 2 thousand Sri Lankans including doctors, nurses, social workers, university professors and students, who now make this help available to tens of thousands more.

A Scientology Volunteer Minister begins a Dianetics counseling session on a Sri Lankan man who lived through the anguish of the tsunami last December.

He helps the person discharge the harmful energy or force connected with the incident ...

... and experience relief from the effect it has had on his life.

Another Sri Lankan receiving Dianetics counseling from a Scientology Volunteer Minister recalls the trauma he experienced.

At the end of the session ...

... he is able to put that part of his life behind him.

* Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
