Peter Cooke, who has been heading up the South African Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) disaster relief team in India, describes the work the VMs are doing with the Rotary Clubs where they have been providing trauma relief and training in Cuddalore and Nagapathnum, two of the areas hardest hit by the tsunamis:
“The President of Rotary International, Mr. Rajendra Sabhu, visited the Cuddalore district last week where he met with district Rotary members and assessed the needs of the areas affected.

“The Rotary Club has been working in the Tamil Nad region in co-ordination with the members of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers relief effort. These volunteers are specialists in disaster relief, emotional impact assessment and trauma relief counseling and training.
“More than two hundred Volunteer Ministers are participating in relief teams in all of the countries affected by the tsunami, including Indonesia, Thailand, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and India.
“On meeting the Scientology Volunteer Ministers and coming to know of their mission, Mr. Rajendra Sabhu acknowledged them saying, ’We, as Rotary members and as India, wish to thank you for coming here from all over the world from countries where most would consider this natural calamity as being sad, but not their own problem. This is a humanitarian problem affecting the brotherhood of mankind and it is my honor and privilege to have met the Scientology volunteers. Your being here has refreshed my hope as you are true humanitarians, bringing hope for humanity.”
“The Scientology relief teams have been in India since January 1st. They are comprised of a co-ordination office in Chennai and two specialist teams; one in Cuddalore and one in Nagapathnum. These teams are delivering training to Tamil-speaking volunteers on Scientology assists that help victims who are experiencing emotional trauma and related problems. These processes allow a victim to completely resolve the emotional barriers which are preventing them from coming to terms with the disaster and re-establishing their lives.”
The Scientology Volunteer Ministers are training volunteers who speak English and Tamil in these techniques. Training takes one to two days and is free of charge. Those interested are urged to contact National Coordinator Dr. Geoffrey Barton (98804 50341 or 98804 50342).

1. Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
