SCIENTOLOGY VOLUNTEER MINISTER NEWS

DATELINE GROUND ZERO—WHAT THEY SAID

FROM A POLICEMAN

“We get a lot of the credit, but a lot of the credit has to go to the people like the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who provided us with comfort at a time when we needed it probably more than most people understand or realize.” — New York City Policeman

Those words were echoed by firemen, policemen, medical and rescue teams working amidst the devastation at Ground Zero. Scientology Volunteer Ministers were there with them, day in and day out, providing real help whenever and wherever needed.

Scientologists were some of the first people at the site of the World Trade Center disaster. Literally within minutes, Scientology Volunteer Ministers in New York and around the country mobilized into action. Within hours, they’d established themselves at Ground Zero, and within days the word was out: “If you need something, go see the guys in the yellow shirts. They’ll get the job done.”

While support poured in—donations, condolences and prayers—the scene at the disaster site needed something more. The physical wreckage was mirrored by mental and emotional wreckage of workers at the site.

Their job was overwhelming: Fireman and police had lost hundreds of their brothers in the catastrophe. No service lines had been set up to deal with the emergency. Yet, the atmosphere was one of desperation to recover any survivors still trapped in the rubble.

RESTORING ORDER TO THE ENVIRONMENT

This was what the Scientology Volunteer Ministers confronted as they approached Ground Zero.

One Volunteer Minister took charge of all volunteers reporting to the site to help. Others drew up an organizing board and formed units to provide food and water to workers.

And they provided something far more valuable: help directly from The Scientology Handbook through the care of a Volunteer Minister. Time after time, a fireman who’d lost a fellow fireman in the tragedy would receive an assist to get him through the incident and back into the present—and back to the job at hand. Even though workers crawled over mountains of twisted steel, on no sleep, injuries were almost non-existent; and more than one firefighter attributed it to an assist received from a Volunteer Minister.

As the rescue efforts ended, there was no question in the minds of officials and rescue workers at the site about the role the Volunteer Ministers had played: “We couldn’t have done what we did without you.”

FROM A EMERGENCY RESCUE WORKER

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know that you’ve made a difference. I saw it first hand. It takes special people to leave their house, to leave where they’re from for weeks at a time and give of themselves freely and genuinely because they want to make a difference. I know for a fact you made a difference.”

FROM VOLUNTEER MINISTERS AT GROUND ZERO

“It was incredible. They [police, firemen] would come crying, some of them, with what they were seeing in the pit. They would come to us, the ministers, the assist auditors. I can remember the one’s that came to me and said, ’You know, I can’t sleep at night. I’m in fear.’ And I would just use the technology, the assists, nerve assists, locationals, two-way comm. They would leave saying ’Scientology. I need to know more about this. I’ll be back tomorrow.’”

“I decided to come down here because I wanted to help. I didn’t know what I was going to do, I didn’t know how hard I was going to have to work. I’m prepared to handle any situation, involving any amount of people and whatever comes my way. I can do it anywhere, with family, friends, with strangers on the street. Because if I can do it here, there’s no reason I can’t do it there. I have greater confidence in my ability to be cause.” Volunteer Minister at Ground Zero
