Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour in Brazil
The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour continues its work in Salvador, Brazil.
Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia, and was the first major port, and the capital of colonial Brazil for almost two centuries.
The center of the Brazilian independence movement in the early 19th Century, it is now a major hub of tourism and is the fourth largest city in Brazil.
One area of the city of Salvador is known as Pelourinho. The word “Pelourinho” means whipping post in Portuguese, and the area got its name because it is there that the old slave auctions were held. An estimated 1.3 million slaves were imported into Bahia before slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, double the number imported into the entire United States of America.
Although slavery is a thing of the past in Brazil, modern life has its own stresses—factors that limit one’s potential and suppress one’s ability to survive in life.

The Scientology Volunteer Goodwill Tour is shown here performing stress tests in Pelourinho, Brazil. The stress test uses the E-meter (Electro-psycho-meter) device, which is a religious artifact that enables the Scientology minister to help an individual locate areas of spiritual distress or travail in his or her life.
The minister has the individual think of areas in his or her life that are causing him problems or stress. The meter reacts to his thoughts, helping the individual pinpoint those factors in his life that are causing him the most difficulty.
Having located the greatest source of stress in the person’s life, the
Scientology Volunteer Minister guides the individual to learn those Scientology techniques that will help with his specific area of difficulty. After studying sections of the Scientology Handbook related to his problem, the individual usually finds that these aspects of his life, which had earlier seemed completely insurmountable, are now easy to deal with.
