| Scientology Volunteer Ministers at a graduation ceremony for police they trained in Francistown, Botswana |
In the 1970s L. Ron Hubbard created the Volunteer Ministers program, stating: “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”
With the lowest life expectancy of any country, at 33.87, and over a third of the population living with HIV/AIDS, Botswana was chosen as the first African nation to be visited by the Scientology Volunteer Minister Goodwill Tour.
“The Goodwill tour is here for the people of Botswana” said the International Coordinator for the Volunteer Ministers. “We have answers to the problems Botswanans are facing — practical solutions to communication, relationships and overcoming suppression. We will train anyone who wants learn and all we ask is that they then in turn help others with what they have learned.”
In the 4 months since its arrival in Botswana the tour has introduced over 16,000 people to the technology developed by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion. Over 200 Botswanans have been trained in these techniques, 14 groups have been opened and the first Church of Scientology Mission of Botswana has been established.
