Greek Volunteer Ministers Responded to Prime Minister’s Call to Action

When Prime Minister Karamanlis called a State of Emergency this summer to deal with the fires that destroyed 177,265 hectares (438,040 acres) of land, a corps of Greek Scientology Volunteer Ministers took off for the region to back up the fire fighters and the 1,000 military personnel who were activated to deal with the catastrophe.

They traveled to the rural district of Ilea, where the people had suffered the worst damage and casualties, and they began by transporting the food, water, clothes and other supplies to the destroyed villages, helping to organize the relief effort and coordinating with other humanitarian groups and volunteers to get the job done.

The Volunteer Ministers of Greece became known for their compassion and their effectiveness, as they helped people recover from this year’s devastating forest fires.

The Volunteer Ministers visited village after village, listening to people and helping them work out solutions to the problems that faced them. Their compassion and the spiritual first aid they provided in the form of Scientology assists*, was probably the most important thing they brought to the relief effort.

These Greek Scientologists personified the qualities of the Volunteer Minister as described by L. Ron Hubbard: “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”
