OVERVIEW

The result of the assist this young man received is obvious.

The challenge for relief workers is to provide help on a scale that is commensurate with the scope of the disaster. Because the number of people needing help is beyond what the Volunteer Ministers can deal with on a one-to-one basis, they have been training others. As relief workers, doctors and nurses witness the effectiveness of these simple techniques, there is an increasing demand for this training. So far, the VMs have trained more than 1200 people in the disaster areas on how to administer assists. One hospital is flying in a team of nurses to Aceh in Indonesia to be trained. The leader of a physical therapy association has requested training for his group, while many of the relatives of those injured in the disaster are also learning how to do Scientology assists.

Indonesia

The VMs continue to produce remarkable results. Yesterday they gave assists to three people in severe pain from leg injuries. One man, whose leg was in traction, evidenced great pain when the assist began, with his head tossing from side to side. He became relaxed after 40 minutes and was then able to go to sleep. A 10-year-old boy, at first grief-stricken, brightened up considerably, while another distraught person was smiling by the time his assist was complete.

Thailand

The VMs in Thailand are working with Red Cross staff to travel to villages affected by the tsunami to minister assists to the residents and to help them with the work of reconstruction.

India

One of the locations where the VMs are working is a shelter called St. Joseph’s, where they have been ministering assists to local people. Again, results have been very good. A nine-year-old boy who received an assist took a while to respond at first but by the end of the assist was bright and beaming. He went off happy and starting playing with his friends and cheering them up.

One man who had been experiencing chest pain for a long time told the VM after the assist was over that his pain was gone.

Sri Lanka

The VMs are operating in the Galle area in the south of the island. Local officials and business leaders are very supportive and appreciative of their work.

One man in Galle who was very depressed and seemingly unable to plan his future after losing his clothing business in the disaster, received an assist that resulted in his commenting that he had lost his fear of the future and regained his interest in his livelihood. The following day, he returned requesting another assist, which he received. He is now working to rebuild his business.

Another successful result was an assist given to a woman who was experiencing pain in her leg and shoulder. Afterwards, she proudly displayed her ability to move her foot to the left, right, forwards and backwards, while she said the pain in her shoulder was gone.

Seeing such results, some local business leaders are sending their staff to the training workshops the VMs are holding, so the staff can learn how to do assists as part of their contribution to the recovery effort. The manager of a local hotel has been distributing fliers encouraging people to support the work of the VMs.

1. Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
